Situation

After more than 10 years, Windows 7 was going out of support. This meant that Windows 7 users wouldn’t receive feature updates or security patches, leaving their data vulnerable to hackers. To help customers prepare to upgrade to Windows 10 and to encourage them to purchase a newer device, we needed to inform them in a friendly, nonintrusive way.

Strategy and Execution

The main way we achieved this was through in-product notifications. Unlike the past with Windows XP end of support, where the team at the time used urgent “scare tactics” to cause people to move to WIndows 7, the team wanted to take a friendlier approach.

Starting 8 months before end of support, these notifications would be clearly messaged pop-ups that would appear on all Windows 7 users’ screens when they logged in during a designated time window, informing them that they would need to upgrade from Windows 7 by January 14, 2020. This would consequently decrease the Windows 7 monthly active users (MAU), while increasing Windows 10 MAU.

To accomplish this, the team took the following steps:

Determine specs

In order to create a plan for launching the notifications, we worked with the PM team in order to create a spec for how the pop up would function, including what events would trigger the notification, what sorts of buttons would need to be programed, the frequency of events, the exact targeted SKUs, the logic of overall events, web tracking, etc

Managing timeline

Once the spec was created, I worked to create a timeline so that the notifications could be launched in a timely manner.

Determining dates

To ensure that the notification wouldn’t fall on a holiday or sensitive dates where users would be less likely to receive the message well, I researched global holidays to determine the best days to send the notifications globally.

Crafting language

We worked with the marketing communications team to craft friendly and clear messaging as well as the web team to make sure that we had a helpful landing page for users to learn more. To ensure that the notifications would be able to be understood by a global audience, we localized the messaging on the notification for 95 languages.

Testing

Looking back

As my first project during my first year of full time work, there was a lot to learn. During this time, I learned what made a good project manager as well as how to speak up when I saw things weren’t going as planned. Because we worked with many teams across marketing and engineering, these project management skills were critical for the success of the project.
